Master and Current Artist: My Master artist was Franz Marc, a key player in the Expressionist movements of the early 20th century. He painted a wide variety of subjects, but the one that inspired me when it came to creating this piece was his piece entitled "The Steer (The Bull)". He founded the Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group that favored bold colors, abstract forms and symbolism as a way to cope with the decadence of the modern world.
My current artist is Julie Rhodes, a realism artist with a focus on big cats and other wildlife art. She paints with acrylic on canvas or draws in pastel, but all her artworks are highly detailed, realistic and created with high quality materials. Her artworks inspired me in created a tiger based upon realism values.
Materials: saturated colored pencils to emphasize the subject and create vibrance in the smaller details.
Process: I used a vibrant array of colored pencils in order to show a favor for bold and vivid colors as my master artist, Franz Marc, also portrayed.
Ideas: This piece aims to take a beautiful scene of a subject in its natural environment and implements pollution into the scene. The adding of trash brings attention to the idea that humanity is accumulating too much trash, and will soon begin to bring harm to our beautiful world.

Master and Current Artist: My current artist is Jo Lynch. She has a wide array of painting featuring turtles. Most of her pieces are done through water color to create movement and flow within the painting. I was drawn to her pieces by her use of overly saturated and unrealistic colors associated with the turtle shell. In my own piece, I will not be featuring a traditional turtle shell, so her pieces have provided a lot of inspiration in using other colors to create the shell.
My master artist is Vincent Van Gogh. Most of his pieces, specifically his most famous starry night, take on brush strokes that encompass smaller details. In doing this technique, light is brought unto the piece and ripples of texture are coherent. I incorporated this technique in creating the turtle fins as well as the underside.
Materials: acrylic paints on canvas, and gouache to emphasize smaller more natural details.
Process:
Ideas: This piece centers on a particular subject, the sea turtle, and depicts a message involving the state of our oceans. Our oceans are undergoing effects from climate change that have negative impacts upon the sea plants and wildlife. My piece aims to depict a turtle carrying healthy sea life on its back in the midst of a polluted and dying ocean. This shows the idea that our wildlife is having to adapt and carry the weight of restoring and maintaining their environments. We've placed the burden on our animals of having to live with the pollution and climate change effects that we have created.
Inquiry Question
The message for my portfolio involves themes regarding environmental philosophy as a guiding concept. My concept aims to give an inclusive introduction depicting influential environmental perspectives and findings. My pieces mainly portray world issues such as climate change and pollution. I demonstrate this through pieces that give the perspective of a specific subject in a scene or ecosystem that suffers from these world issues. Some scenes include futuristic or predicted images as to what our world may look like if we do not take a stand to save our environment. While other scenes depict how polluted or damaged our environment is in the present day.
My overall inquiry question: how can I bring awareness to this world issue, environmental impacts due to pollution and climate change?

Master and Current Artist: My current artist is Howard David Johnson, a contemporary artist and photographer with a background in the natural sciences and history. A guiding subject for his pieces are fairies. I took inspiration from the way he was able to create movement and detail in his creation of fairies and implemented this when drawing my own piece. Howard David, works in a wide variety of media ranging from traditional oils, pastels and others, along with a lot of mixing of media. He used a lot of colored pencil because of its high speed and low expense, as well as ability to bring attention to detail. I was inspired by his choice to mix media, so I used colored pencils on top of acrylic paints in order to create a dreamlike/ fantasy feel to the fairy and trees, as well as create smoke on the destruction side of the painting.
My master artist is Cheryl Haithco. Her painting "New Beginnings" left me feeling intrigued by her ability to create intricate folds in the petals of roses and a gentle curve to leaves. While the lines of her piece are exaggerated, the colors truly draw the viewer in. She creates a flow in painting each rose petal with a harsh contrast in light and dark. I incorporated this technique into my own painting by creating a contrast between light and dark colors, as well as vibrant and bright ones. In creating the flowers, I was inspired by Haithco to create a soft flow within the petals.
Materials: acrylic on paper, colored pencils to add detail and a grain-like texture, gouache for saturated colors.
Process: I experimented with mixed media, using the different materials to draw the eye to a certain focal point.
Ideas: Most people understand the basic argument of climate change- that the earth is warming due to increased concentration of greenhouse gases like CO2 in the atmosphere. This piece is meant to truly bring to life climate change, and show the world that climate change is not a problem that we simply talk about, it is real. My piece shows a futuristic image of the effects climate change might have on our world. My subject includes a woman clutching the earth tightly in her arms to symbolize the few people in our world who are willing to make changes in light of this world issue. Beautiful nature surrounds her in order to depict the idea that just one persons small actions can make a difference.
